valley and the national weather center for sacramento has issued a dense fog advisory for the delta and sacramento. by fairfield, further east, you may run into dense fog out there, so be careful. 50 at half moon bay, low 50's at los gatos and upper 50's in santa cruz and 50's in watsonville. the visibility is not great in livermore or santa rosa but improving in napa. novato is up to ten miles. you are half a mile just an hour ago. you will see it is improving around the airport and hayward. san jose has clouds at eight miles visibility. with the cooler air and the trough that is swinging through, we had another system that went through earlier, and numbers are cooler especially at coast, nine degrees cooler this morning with five degrees cooler in livermore, so there is milder mornings are a thing of the past going tomorrow morning where it will be much, much cooler. areas of fog still this morning mainly in our east bay, turning cooler with breezy northwest winds along the shoreline and a cool dry pattern into next week as we begin february with no rain, at all, right on through

you about the new year's eve violence in san francisco last night. police in sacramento are investigating a deadly shooting near a fireworks show. our reporter mike lori tells us two people were killed three others were hurt. what happened out there, mike? >> reporter: well, dave, sacramento police say they have the shooter in custody. the 22-year-old gunman is in the hospital right now. he too was shot it turns out by an armed sure guard who intervened and actually stopped the deadly shooting before it claims even more lives. we do know that two people are dead and three injured following a shooting this tack place a at a bar in old sacramento. one of those dead is an employee, believed to be a waiter who worked in the restaurant. the incident forced the cancellation of new year's eve celebrations, causing thousands of people to head for home without any fireworks at all. here's what one eyewitness told us about. >> we heard gunshots. the dude came into that hooka place shooting. come back out. ran around the corner and was firing down the sidewalk. some guy with a baby

the -- in sacramento has been released from jail. he is accused of injuring four others in a shootout like thousands of people were in old sacramento. montoya faces murder charges and is scheduled to appear in court on tuesday. sacramento's mayor is now proposing a gun buy back program. kevin johnson suggested the idea as officials talked about the response to the shooting. the mayor said giving people cash for guns will help keep weapons off the streets. similar efforts last month in san francisco resulted in hundreds of guns being handed over. >>> they stepped over security to try to stop a recurring problem. the breaks are a prime time for copper thieves to target the schools. the high school was stripped of its metal wiring. they have made an arrest in the case. school hired a security team to curb the problem and they are asking neighbors to keep an eye out for suspicious activity. >> east bay fire activities may be failing to meet the times. this is the only east bay fire department that meets four key benchmarks for protection. they include having four firefighters in each engine and truck an

in three incidents. they were all very minor incidents. in the sacramento river he briefly brushed the bank. could happen to any river pilot. >> reporter: on august 27th, 2009, kleess was piloting a 560- foot bulk carrier the sh grace up the sacramento river and brushed against the bank. the state found no pilot error. two days later he was guiding a 609-foot ship into the port of stockton. it appears an underwater portion of the bow made contact with an underwater portion of a wooden pylon and damaged the catwalk. then on may 26, 2010, captain kleess was on another ship going into the richmond inner harbor, a trainee doing the work and kleess was supervising when a tugboat hit bottom and scraped some paint off the bottom of the tug.

sacramento. only at 49 today. fresno at 50 and the same here. the forecast for the bay area, we're going to be looking at numbers all within a few degrees of 50. 51 at mountainview, 51 at fremont, 51 at hayward and 50 degrees down at morgan hill. 101 down there at the east dunn avenue. 50 degrees at pittsburgh. the thing for them here, napa the same. 39 for livermore. up in the north bay, a little chillier there. sampson beach at 51 degrees. 52 at mill valley and 41 degrees in san rafael. for the nfl playoffs tonight. green bay verses san francisco. mostly clear and cool. temperatures will be about 49 degrees at game time. in the extended forecast, we're going to be looking for things to stay sunny all week long and the numbers will not improve dramatically if you consider warmer temperatures in improvement, you'll get it, but it will take until the end of the week. numbers will be near approaching, perhaps even suggesting saying 65 by next saturday. >> balmy. >> yes, california standards, yeah. >> all right, thanks. >>> doctors and other professio

. the great sacramento valley. 200 miles of it. literally from the beginning of san francisco bay, 200 miles up the sacramento river. and probably, i haven't been able to count all the levees in my district, but i probably have well over 1,500 miles of levees that protect large cities, medium-sized cities, farms and other critical assets and infrastructure in the state of california. for example, the intercontinental rail system. both north and south. intercontinental highway systems. universities. international airports. these critical assets are at risk of flooding. the army corps of engineers, taking a look at the levees in one part of my district, a basin which is part of the city of sacramento, judges those levees to have a one in 30 chance of failure so that over a 30-year period of time it's anticipated there will be a catastrophic failure of those levees. 100,000 lives just in that part of sacramento at immediate risk because those flood waters, should those levees fail, it would make -- it would be a repeat of what happened in new orleans only the water is deeper. and the flood wate
